World's First Vertical Forest to be Completed This Year!

A vertical forest is expected to be completed this year in Milan. There are two tower apartment complexes which contain a total of 400 residential units. The facade of the buildings will be covered with 730 trees, 5,000 shrubs, and 11,000 perennial plants. It is expected to have the same ecological impact as 10,000 square meters of forest.

Aside from fighting smog and producing oxygen, the foliage is expected to provide insulation to the residential units.

This new idea can have far reaching implications for city dwelling as we know it. As we noted in our previous article on urban homesteading, the densely populated urban areas of the world are in dire need of increased food democracy. Currently there is a crisis stemming from the fact that our food supply is overly centralized and ripe for abuse, making the case for distributed food systems all the more important. Food forests similar to the one pictured above can(and should be) set to grow not only oxygen producing plants, but organic fruit, vegetables, and fish as well if they are set up using aquaponics or vertical growing techniques.

Many people do not have the large yards and space to grow a conventional garden at their homes, but there are some other techniques that could help you set up a garden in a limited space. One technique that is easy to set up and is also very cost effective is the vertical "pallet garden". In three simple steps you will have a vertical garden that only takes up around three square feet of your patio, balcony, or yard.

 Supplies needed:

*Used chemical free wood pallet
*Nails
*Staple gun
*1/4 inch staples
*Hammer *Scissors
*Landscape fabric

Here is a short video that explains how to build a pallet garden.

These pallet gardens are easy to build and maintain, but they are also very easy to expand on and get creative with. You can build living fences that can produce organic food for you and your family, or use it so save space on your apartment's balcony.
