Why You Should be Drinking Alkaline Water and How to Make it

What’s in your water?

Image: valsocal.blogspot.com
When you think about your personal health and nutrition goals, what food or nutrients do you usually consider to be most important? Consider this: Our brains are made up of about 70% water, our bodies about 80%, surely water should be considered one of the most important things we put into our body on a daily basis. Each morning when you rise, you are already 2 cups dehydrated.

To enhance your daily protocol whatever it may be now, you can do 1 simple thing that will give you more energy, help you focus, and reduce cravings. Can you guess what that 1 thing is going to be? Upon waking, drink 1 litre of filtered alkaline water. This is something Caleb and I were  advised to do by Preet at Organic Lives in Vancouver, BC when we began our journey with raw foods.

Your Tap water is generally a mixture of chlorine, anti-biotics, hormones and other metals that will go straight into your system.

Impure water can cause a weakened immune system and an array of other illnesses that occur when the immune system is vulnerable. You’re also in danger should anything contaminate the public water sources. I’m sure from time to time you’ve heard or read about the acid/alkaline balance that’s so crucial to staying healthy. When our bodies are too acidic, we experience low energy, fatigue, digestive issues, weight gain and other side effects that are completely avoidable just by drinking pure water and eating fresh organic vegetables with a healthy acid/alkaline balance.

Alkalinity is the key to a healthy immune system

Use an alkaline water filtration system whenever possible. Alkaline filtration systems can be costly, ranging from 1-3k, however you are able to find personal alkaline wands at your local health food store for around $30. Ideally, fresh spring water is the absolute best water for you to drink. Find a Spring is a website that was created for the sole purpose of helping you find the closest springs near your area.

You can find a natural spring near you at this website.

Should you happen to be the resourceful type, we’ve shared a home made alkaline water recipe that was given to us by Preet Marwaha over at Organic Lives in Vancouver, BC.

Alkaline water recipe:

1 Pitcher (64 ounces) of clean filtered water (if tap water is all that is available, use that. The cleaner the better)
1 Organic Lemon, washed, cut into eighths
1 tsp Himalayan Pink Salt (this is optional and will mineralize your Alkaline Water)

Directions: Fill pitcher, add in Lemon wedges (do not squeeze!). Then add 1 tsp. Himalayan Pink Salt, cover, and let sit overnight (8-12 hrs.) at room temperature. Wake up and drink 3
glasses first thing for best Alkaline balance in your body.

Top 10 Most Effective Detox Tips

Carly Fraser | Live Love Fruit

Image: healthybliss.net
Although our top detoxing organs like the liver, kidneys, and intestines help remove toxins, they sometimes need a little help. With the increase in toxic agents polluting the earth (be it in our food, air, water, household products or personal products), our organs become overwhelmed and eventually fail to function at their most optimal level. Living without toxic buildup is pretty much impossible, and this is why our bodies have been so brilliantly blessed with these amazing detox organs!

When our detox organs are compromised, we may start to feel overly tired, get sick more often or develop diseases and illnesses that can’t be explained otherwise. Free radicals from toxins build up in the body over time and can physically affect both the structure and function of cells, leading to a myriad of health problems. Fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases, chronic fatigue, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, premature aging, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, skin conditions, arthritis, cancer, food allergies/intolerances are all signs that your body is suffering from toxic buildup.

Here are some simple, easy ways to help your body with the detox process and prevent toxic buildup.

1. Drink 1 litre of lemon water upon waking
Lemon water in the morning is an incredibly efficient way to flush out toxins. Sleep is the time the body can undergo repair and detoxification. Upon waking, making sure you drink at least 1 litre of water (especially with added lemon) takes the buildup of these toxins and flushes them out. Why add lemon? The lemon acts as a natural diuretic, which means that is helps flush out unwanted materials by increasing the rate of urination in the body. It will also help boost your immune system, balance your pH, help with weight loss, aid in digestion and hydrate your lymphatic system.

2. Can’t read it? Don’t eat it!
Eating heavily processed foods with ingredients you can’t pronounce is a sure way to increase toxic build-up in the body. If you can’t read the ingredients on labels, then put it back on the shelf and don’t think about buying it! Staying away from anything packaged (bottled, canned, boxed) is an easy way to avoid this issue altogether.

3. Become a friend to mono-meals
Mono-meals (eating one food item at a time – for example, just eating watermelon in the morning, or just eating oranges for a meal) are a wonderful way to speed up digestion and prevent unnecessary processing of different food groups in our intestine. When we overload our digestive tract with a variety of different foods, we become slowed down and tired – this also puts more stress and work involved in our organs which could otherwise use a break every once in awhile by eating more simply.

4. Boost your health with herbs
Dandelion, black walnut, cilantro, worm wood, milk thistle – the list goes on! These helpful herbs have been used for centuries to cleanse the various detox organs and systems of the body. They are known across many cultures to help with various ailments and health issues. Dandelion, for example supports bile production. Bile helps transport toxins out of the body, and prevents toxic buildup.

5. Eliminate animal products
If you want to truly get deep down into the detox process, you should eliminate all animal-based food products from your diet (this includes meat (fish, red meat & white meat), eggs, and dairy). Animal products produce an acidic state in the body which leaves acid residues in the blood and tissues. Animal products also produce highly putrefactive protein waste in the bowels. Cancer cells thrive on animal products (due to their highly acidic state in the body), and can rapidly multiply in this pH level.

In addition, animal products require an incredible amount of energy and enzyme power to digest and assimilate (much more than fruit and vegetables). When the body is focused on processing and digesting food, it cannot spare extra energy to go toward cleansing and repairing itself. Dumping animal products altogether will give your body more energy to focus on detoxing and repairing instead of digesting all the time.

6. Get your blood pumping
It is very beneficial to get sufficient exercise every day to help your body sweat out toxins and to keep your lymphatic system flowing. Exercising also helps burn fat (especially when you hit the higher intensity forms of exercise like high intensity interval training), and fat tends to hold onto toxins the firmest – allowing your body to shed fat is also helping it expel and clean out toxic waste.

7. Get in tune with nature
Spending time in nature is crucial! Even if you get to make it out to the park with trees and grass (or snow) a couple times a week will help ground yourself so you feel more alive! I personally try to go into a nearby forest a couple times a week and since I have been doing this I have felt an overall sense of calmness and serenity. I feel incredibly at home when I am surrounded by nature. What does going into nature have to do with detox? When we are stressed, free radicals are formed, and free radicals can be viewed as a form of toxin. Nature is simply a way to de-stress, connect with mother earth, and feel at one with the beauty of the natural world.

8. Drink more water
Why is water important to detox? If we are not properly hydrated, then our cells will draw water from the bloodstream and thus can put major pressure on the heart and vasculature in the body. Even mild dehydration prevents the kidneys from properly purifying the blood. When the kidneys aren’t functioning, then the workload on other detox organs like the liver and gallbladder become stronger, and can caused them to become severely stressed. Then health problems begin to develop (constipation, skin conditions, nosebleeds, UTIs, sinus problems, headaches) and symptoms may be wrongly attributed to something non-related.

Drinking at least 3-4L of water daily will dramatically improve your health and overall state of mind. You will digest your food better, your joints will ache less, you will lose weight and have better immunity. Water stimulates the kidneys, liver and digestive system and will in turn accelerate toxin and fat elimination.

9. Focus on raw fruit and vegetables
This point is a given – eating more raw fruit and vegetables will make you shine! The fibre in plant matter helps push out built-up waste matter in the colon (which is filled with toxins, and constantly gets re-absorbed back into the blood stream if not eliminated). Not only that, but the antioxidants in fruit and vegetables help combat free radicals in the body and helps the elimination organs with their job. Consuming fruit and vegetables in their raw state also makes the enzymes and nutrients more bio-available in your body, helping you become vitamin or mineral deficient-free. Vegetables and fruit are very easily digestible too, meaning that your body can put more energy toward expelling toxins, and repairing our cells and tissues.

10. Practice slowing down & breathing
Slowing down and appreciating the small things in life are crucial to attain a calm state of mind and reduce stress levels. Deep diaphragmatic breathing is especially important when cleansing/detoxing. It is also simple to attain this every day – take 10-15 minutes a day to sit with yourself and breathe. Focus on your breaths, and clear the mind. Free radicals are formed when we are stressed, so slowing down, breathing, practicing to be present and meditating are great practices to help calm and nourish your body.

Detox your liver by juicing these 5 organic ingredients

Your first line of defense against toxins is your liver! Cleansing the liver helps it produce better, more efficient bile, which helps your body flush toxins and break down fat more effectively. Many fruits and vegetables help to cleanse the liver, but dandelion greens (and other bitter greens like arugula and mustard greens) are particularly effective.

This amazing green helps to increase bile flow so that the liver can be properly detoxed. The incredible mineral and vitamin density of these greens also helps flush out toxins, binding to them and transferring them to the kidneys to be eliminated via urination.

Celery is also a diuretic while increases urine flow to help expel toxins at a faster rate, while ginger helps to eliminate bacteria and viruses and any inflammation that might be harming our precious detox organs.

Ingredients:
- 1 bunch organic dandelion greens
- 5 large organic carrots
- 1 head organic celery
- 2 lemons
- 4-5 inches ginger
- *Optional: to sweeten, add 2 granny smith apples (to make dandelion greens less bitter)

Take the above ingredients and juice them in a juicer. Enjoy!

"Chlorophyll will be the principle protein for the coming light bearing age. When freshly made in a drink, it contains synthesized sunshine, plus the electric current necessary for the revitalization of the body, and it will open areas of the brain that man yet known nothing about."-Dr. Ann Wigmore, 'Let There Be Light'
Image: Live Love Fruit
The fresh juice of plants is very much like the juice of our cells. Drinking the juice of fresh greens be it herbs or foods is like drinking the nectar of the rejuvenation of youth. The essential elements that may be lacking in your body cells- particularly the live enzymes, bioactive vitamins, minerals, trace minerals and other unknown factors that- can be easily assimilated through daily green sunlight transfusion of fresh green juices that are often destroyed by processing.

Use organic produce as much as possible, and drink immediately after extracting. Be sure to drink slowly and swish around in your mouth for around 30 seconds to activate the enzymes in your mouth and prevent bloating and digestive upset. Be creative with these recipes and use whatever greens and produce you have in your garden and what's in season. When juicing greens balance them with pleasant sweet tasting vegetables such as: carrot, beets, squash, celery or a few apples to give it that familiar taste you are familiar with.

Lemon Water:
Drink lemon water in the morning to help flush out toxins. Squeeze 1 lemon into 1 litre of water to do a full-body flush.

Orange Juice:
A little later in the morning prepare 4 large freshly pressed oranges and 1 cup young thai coconut water (don't drink pasturized orange juice! This is heated to high temperatures so the enzymes are destroyed). Oranges are great for pulling out toxins from our cells and the natural sugars help feed our glucose-hungry brain. Coconut is great for replenishing electrolytes we require throughout the day.

Green Juice:
The chlorophyll molecule closely resembles hemin (a component of hemoglobin), the pigment that combines with protein to form hemoglobin. The latter is present in the red corpuscles of the blood and by carrying oxygen to the tissues makes the production of energy and life possible. The major difference between chlorophyll and hemin is that chlorophyll contains magnesium while hemin contains iron as its central atom.

Fresh green juices used without any additional dietary changes have a great effect on a wide range of diseases. The human being dies from over 250 known diseases, whereas grass-eating animals in the wild, such as the horse, deer, steer or elephant are prone to only five or ten diseases. The only explanation that scientists have been able to come up with is that these animals are living on a diet that is fresh and grown naturally by the earth without the use of chemicals.

You may choose any of the green juices from this blog (or whatever you can come up with). Include some kind of sweeter root vegetable or apple for some sweetness, and at least 1 lemon and ginger or turmeric to add a full-body detox kick. Add a bunch of leafy greens (either kale, romaine, or some other leafy green), and neutral vegetables like celery, cucumber and fennel.

Beet Juice:
Beet juice helps to replenish our blood cells and prevent anemia. There are plenty of juice recipes on this blog that feature beets. Typically, a great beet juice recipe includes 3-4 beets, a handful of carrots, 3-4 inches ginger, 1 lemon and 5-6 stalks celery.

Here Are the 8 Most Alkaline Foods

Natural Cures Not Medicine on Facebook: www.facebook.com/naturalcuresnotmedicine
Image: Live Love Fruit

Pretty much every fruit and vegetable has an alkaline effect on the body, however, a select few (listed below) are those which rank highest among the plant family. It is also important to note that most of these vegetables and fruits are best eaten raw, because cooking raising acidic levels.

Our body is designed to be alkaline – our blood has a pH of 7.365, which is slightly alkaline and it will do whatever it can to regulate our pH levels. The Standard American Diet, consumed by a large portion of the population, is the main culprit causing our body to be in a constant state of acidity. Consuming highly acidic foods like processed foods, soda, junk foods, meat, eggs, and dairy, strips our bones from crucial minerals in order to buffer the acidity and do its best to keep our body in an alkaline state. This leads to things like osteoporosis and other degenerative diseases.

In fact, major illnesses that plague the majority of the planet are caused by a high-acid diet, leading to things like heart disease, stroke, cancer, skin disorders, auto-immune conditions, allergies – the list goes on. You might feel fine now but your body will eventually grow out of it’s optimal pH balance and you will become victim of some disease or illness.

Here is a list of 8 alkaline foods you should be consuming every day, or every second day!

Kale

All leafy greens are alkaline forming. Kale is especially high in alkaline-forming minerals like calcium and magnesium, and is one of the most mineral dense greens out there! Kale is a power food, and has a major chlorophyll component which attributes to it’s amazing alkaline properties. Thanks to kale’s glucosinolate compounds, it has the ability to fight off cancer too!

Lemons

You might be confused by seeing lemon on the high-alkaline list. Lemons are actually incredibly high in alkaline minerals like potassium, magnesium and sodium which have alkalizing effects on the body. The citric acid in lemons, in its natural state, is highly acidic. However, when consumed, this citric acid gets metabolized and has a wonderful alkaline effect on the body.

Broccoli

Broccoli is packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals which have alkalizing effects on the body. They contain vitamin’s C, K and A, as well as minerals like manganese, potassium, iron and protein (not to mention folate and tonnes of fiber!). They also contain sulforaphane which is a great cancer-fighting compound!

Celery

Celery is one of the most alkaline foods you can eat! It quickly neutralizes acids and is high in potassium and sodium which makes it a great diuretic (helps rid the body of excess fluid). Celery is also a very high-water content food, so it helps hydrate and nourish the cells in your body.

Avocado

Avocados are very high in potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium and copper (as well as a variety of vitamins like A, B, C, and E), making it a great alkaline forming food! They are rich in health-promoting essential fatty acids which actually help promote weight loss. They are not only healthy-fat rich, but they are water-rich too! This helps flush out acidic waste, and promotes a more alkaline environment in the body.

Red Pepper

Most peppers, including cayenne peppers, have a pH above 8 which helps transform acidic foods, raising the body’s overall alkaline level. Cut up some red pepper in your salad, or eat it like an apple! Consuming raw foods maintains an alkaline state in the body, whereas cooked foods are more acidifying.

Cucumber

Cucumbers are wonderful for the skin and are highly alkaline. They are composed of up to 95% water and packed with vitamin’s C and K as well as minerals like potassium, manganese, magnesium and molybdenum. Most of the minerals are in the skin of the cucumber, so be sure to include the skin when you are consuming since the minerals are what keep the body in an alkaline state.

Spinach

Spinach is one of the top alkaline foods you should include in your diet. It is considered a dark leafy green, packed with nutrients like vitamins A, K, C, B1, B2, B3, B6 and E. It is also loaded with minerals that provide the body with amazing alkaline effects such as manganese, magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium and folate. Spinach is very chlorophyll rich too, which acts as an alkalizer and brings your body back to the optimal 7.4 range.

Take Care of Hearburn With This Natural DIY Juice

Natural Cures Not Medicine on Facebook: www.facebook.com/naturalcuresnotmedicine

Image: Raw Edibles
Heartburn can be a very uncomfortable condition, and many individuals deal with it day to day. A major cause for heartburn is eating fatty greasy foods - eliminating these foods will help to reduce the occurrence of heartburn and acid reflux. Combining foods properly is also key to helping prevent heartburn.

If you are currently suffering from this condition I would suggest working at reducing the amount of fatty processed foods you consume and work towards eating a more whole foods diet. In the mean time, here is a juice that will help ease your symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn. Aloe vera juice is very alkaline which helps remove excess acid from the body. It is also helpful at detoxifying the body and works as an anti-inflammatory agent. These properties help repair damage to the esophagus that occur when someone experiences acid reflux or heartburn.

Cucumber is also very cooling, and alkaline, and buffers the acid in the stomach. Fennel, too, is a great food for acid reflux and actually seems to improve stomach function.

Ingredients:
- 4 oz. organic, raw aloe vera juice (can be bought at any health food store like whole foods)
- 1 cucumber
- 1 fennel bulb
- 1 knob of ginger (I use 4 inches or so)
- 1-2 lemons

Juice the above ingredients (except for the aloe), and add aloe to your freshly pressed juice. Mix & serve!
