If you're not opposed
to using alcohol in a bug spray... this is a good one that works, free from
chemicals that poison the body. Ingredients: 1/2 liter of alcohol -17 oz, 100
gram of whole cloves -3.6 oz, 100 ml of baby oil or similar -3.4 oz (almond, sesame,
chamomile, lavender, fennel etc)
Action:
Leave cloves to marinate in alcohol four days
Stir every morning and evening
After 4 days add the oil
It's now ready to use.
Application:
Gently rub a few drops into the skin of the arms and legs.
Observe the mosquitoes fleeing the room.
Repels fleas on pets too.
Action:

ReplyDeleteYou can probably use either rubbing alcohol or 100 proof vodka. Shouldn't matter. As far as the almond, sesame, chamomile, fennel, part. I am not sure, but I will go out on a limb and make a stab since I make my own bug sprays and lotions all of the time. You can use Almond oil, sesame oil, pumpkin seed oil, or whatever oil you instead of baby oil. Baby oil works because it is a light oil and soaks into the skin easily, but almond oil is nice on the skin and so is pumpkin seed oil, although I would use less of it since these oils are thicker than baby oil. Baby oil is also cheaper, but use what you have if you don't want to buy something. You can even use olive oil as it too is good for the skin. As far as the rest. With the cloves you can add lavender or chamomile flowers to the alcohol or use essential oils. Another GREAT essential oil, and probably the best, in my opinion, is lemon eucalyptus oil and is recognized by the FDA as a natural alternative to Deet. These home made concoctions last about half as long as a high quality deet spray, but if you make it with a scent you like and not to oily, you won't care about putting it on a lot. THis stuff is not tacky feeling like commercial sprays either. I also just use essential oils with witch hazel to make a quick cheap spray. Experiment. There are all kinds of essential oils and natural plants that repel bugs. Find something you like and go with it. There are also other recipes online if you look. I don't use recipes anymore. I add a little of this, that and whatever else I'm in the mood for and it always seems to be mostly effective. I still use the heavy duty commercial stuff if we are working out in the woods or in the swamps, but for most uses like camping, picnics or just hanging around outside, the DIY stuff is pretty decent, smells good, you won't need to wash it off before going to bed and it's not bad for you like deet is.
