Update* The world's largest producer of seeds, Monsanto, has apparently given up on attempts to spread its genetically modified plant varieties in Europe. A German media report said the firm would end all lobbying for approval. The German newspaper "taz" reported Friday that US agriculture behemoth Monsanto had dropped any plans to have farmers grow its genetically modified (GM) plant varieties in Europe. Monsanto Europe spokesman Brandon Mitchener was quoted as saying the company would no longer engage in any lobbying fur such plants on the continent, adding that at the moment the firm was unwilling to apply for approval of any GM plants. source http://www.dw.de

    1. Your so right, I haven't seen any bees yet either, they are quickly dying. and without bees, nothing gets polinated, because of course monsanto poisons. Hopefully Canada will get rid of them, and soon

    2. Totally agree, hopefully in Canada, our government will grow a brain, and stop it too. There are no bees seen here, and that means no pollination here, thanks to their poisons

    3. Jo-Anne-- no bees here in Charleston-- have to be away from where they are spraying apparently for mosquitoes and in subdivisions.

    4. You guys are rediculous! if there are no bees, then how do the flowers, and cherry blossoms get pollinated?

    6. There are other insects that pollinate as well. As soon as they destroy the natural insects they will have patented genetic insects that will be sold to do the job.

    3. Not so much a victory as you think. All UK supermarkets except Waitrose are now selling meat which was fed on GM animal feed. Unless you buy organic meat from them, you are buying GM. Their excuse is that it has become too difficult to source non GM feed, which is rubbish of course. They make more profits from GM. Waitrose will hold out as much as is possible. Marks and Spencers, you are a disgrace! Our government has now said it will go down the GM path alone. Please don't think that the European governments are against GM food, they are all for it! It is the people who are against it.

    1. Nope. You can't sell GM produce in Europe for human consumption. At. All.

    3. In Europe and elsewhere many people drink american sodas like Coca-cola for instance, containing high fructose corn syrup. 80% of american's corn is genetically modified, so you can conclude there is a big chance these sodas' core ingredients are derived from GMOs. It is not only the selling, growing, harvesting of GM seeds that has to be banned in Europe or elsewhere. As long as we cosume products derived from GMOs produced in countries such as the US /China /India /Argentina etc... there will be GMOs and Monsanto will keep its power over the world, the politics, the agrocultural industrie. So start by checking by what company you are giving money to when you go in the supermarket for your groceries. the power is in our wallets, Monsanto's existence and power relies on it.

    4. in Europe and elsewhere we consume sodas like Cocacola for instance. One core ingredient of these sodas is high fructose corn syrup. 80% of american's corn is actually genetically modified corn, so we can easily assume the corn syrup used in these sodas comes from this GM corn. It is not only that the growing, harvesting, using GMOs that has to be banned in Europe, we have to stop consuming products that contain ingredients derived from GMOs coming from countries where the exploitation of the GMOs are authorized ( US/china/India/Brazil/Argentina etc...). So we have to be very conscious and aware when we do our groceries. The power is in our wallets, Monsanto relies on this and only power in order to exist.

Same when I was in Europe. I'm totally against GMO's and Monsanto. Luckily we still have lots of bees here in Arizona:) I hope everyone wakes up and stands up to Monsanto!

  9. Note its only on corn>>>

they have struck a deal with the sugar companies [has all sugar manufacturing and side products there of in Europe] so they will grow GMO sugarbeets since its not cropos they will sell its the finished product [sugar in all forms] it is not illegal..

  13. Monsanto will not see itself as defeated! This is a strategic move, be sure of that. But at the same time, it is a move because people have stood up against the company, so they have been beaten in one battle, but the war for them is not over, they have invested too much for that: now is the time to 1) consolidate themselves in other parts of the world 2) buy off more politicians on the global scene and that also regionally and locally, to be able to return 3) wait and see how for instance in Sweden the national GMO industry is moving forward paving the way for GMO; 4) to sell the product but not produce it in Europe for the time being. These people are not to be trusted. They have a horrible record and wants to introduce a world monopoly on what they sell and what is produced, and that means in the final end complete control. Dictatorship!

    1. You are absolutely right, it is being pushed on us in Europe whether we want it or not. GM food is being fed to all the animals being sold in supermarkets, except Waitrose and organic of course.

  14. This may not be the end of it though - In the US, in Oregon, where Monsanto stopped trials and development of it's GMO corn, some GMO corn from the trial farms has found it's way to the market. The farmers who let their farms be used by Monsanto apparently were not compelled to destroy the resulting crops. Let's hope these European farmers are not either ignorant or greedy enough to do the same!

  15. the real worry is the bees !!!
If GMO sprayed seed kills off bee colonies, people around the world, regardless of their relationship to Monsanto seeds, wont be able to pollinate their non GMO crops !Albert Einstein speculated that,. "If the bees disappeared off the surface of the globe,. man would have left only four years of life.

    4. Africa is not a country, it is a continent. South Africa is one African country witch is producing GMO maize, cotton and soybean. GMO maize is now being exported to Mexico, which is the global repository of genetic diversity for maize, among the world’s three most important staple foods. With South Africa’s export of GM maize and Mexico’s acceptance of it, both governments promote the contamination of peasant maize in its center of origin, threatening biodiversity and food sovereignty in all countries.

  21. more of a publicity for Monsanto than anything else, they are still lobbying europe, they are still authorised, they have just lobbyed europe to allow 66 new gmo even though they claimed (2 years ago as its not new) to have given up on europe, they are still killing bees, they are still patenting life, they are still selling roundup, I don't really see anything that has changed

when you look closely at the article and listen to the video, I'd say it was more a "why can't we do it here if everyone else is allowed to" reaction seeking

  33. First of all Europe is not a county, but a continent. You all knew that, right? Next, does everyone hate Portugal and Spain now? Europe didn't win anything. Their governments operate in a more clandestine way than that of the US'. For example, my friend is Germany buys her produce just to find that it is from China. Why is that?

    Think!

Does anyone ever question what they read or do they celebrate whatever confirmation bias they can find. It's always Europe vs America. You know, these aren't the only strips of land with humans on it on the earth, right?

Don't be naive. chemtrails piloted by Europeans are suffocating the crops over there right now to the point where, like the US, will have NO CHOICE AT ALL but to buy Monsanto's aluminum resistant seed.

Also chemtrails will dumb you down too.

Pay attention and wake up, people! Every government out there is going broke and wants a piece of the fat-cat pie. Some of your European friends even attend Bilderberg meetings.

Goodness sakes... pay attention, fellow comrades!

    1. You know I think your wrong... Europe did win something! And I think it is a win for the people of the US too.

Countries are lining up banning US Wheat imports this week... The US wants to sell its produce around the Globe and the EU is a huge market it can sell to. How can you sell something that what someone does not want!

Make no mistake, Europeans do not want GMO, Monsanto are backing off because we have had GMO labelling here for years and demand is very very low!

This would be the same in the US too if you had labelling, but Monsanto's whole success relies on selling their product by hidden means, they need the US public not to know what is in their food for the whole GMO experiment to thrive. (I'm sure the guys at the top in Monsanto wish they did more to stop GMO labelling in Europe when they had the chance)

Anyhow, my point is this is big news! Monsanto want out of the EU before they were pushed out, now they claim the reason is they only want to sell their seeds in counties that appreciate them, get political support from and who have good regulation practices! Like the EU doesn't but somewhere like India/China does! Ha

Also nothing to do with the recent big march against them, or the fact the EU has banned pesticides for 2 years to give the Bee's a chance to recover. What next would they ban?

It is a victory, a Corporation whose only interest is profit, whose goal is Global domination, does not back out of the Worlds largest market and you say Europe didn't win anything!

My only hope now is the EU purchases no GMO products from the US... not to hurt the US farmer, but to send a clear message that these engineered crops are bad... very bad, and what can kill weed cells and also kill our cells!!!

When international demand for all US crops drops completely maybe finally the US Government will step in and realise GMO was not in the end good for the US economy, but only good for Agribusiness and the senators who took the brown envelopes.

This could in the end be the start of a victory for all of us...
